As I reflect on my first year as a graduate student at California State University San Bernardino, pursuing a degree in Communications and Media, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement and fulfillment. Communications and Media have always been my passion, stemming from my undergraduate years here at CSUSB, where I obtained my Bachelor's degree in Communications. The professors, the atmosphere, everything about this institution drew me back for my graduate studies.
My journey to this point has been a gradual progression, punctuated by diverse experiences. After completing my Bachelor's degree in 2018, I took a well-deserved break before exploring into other fields of study. From earning my Associates in Legal Studies to taking a brief hiatus, I never strayed too far from academia. And when the time was right, I eagerly embarked on my Master's program, feeling a sense of familiarity mixed with newfound enthusiasm.
One of the highlights of this year was reconnecting with my undergraduate roommate, who shared my enthusiasm for returning to CSUSB for our Master's degrees. Recreating the camaraderie and shared experiences from our undergrad days has been nothing short of exhilarating, akin to stepping into a time machine and reliving cherished memories.
While the journey has been largely smooth, it hasn't been devoid of challenges. Group projects tested my emotional and mental resilience, but each setback served as a lesson in perseverance. As the saying goes, "What doesn't kill me makes me stronger," and I'm determined to emerge from these experiences stronger and more resilient than ever.
My academic pursuits have evolved significantly over the past year. Initially drawn to the idea of exploring non-verbal communication in professional wrestling, I found myself pivoting towards a more profound exploration of sexual misconduct, abuse, and misogyny in the industry. My goal now extends beyond research; it's about effecting real change and advocating for a safer and more equitable environment for female workers in professional wrestling.
Looking ahead, my aspirations remain steadfast. I envision myself as a teacher of Communications and Media, imparting knowledge and skills in public speaking and communication theories. From Coordinated Management of Meaning to feminist theory, my goal is to empower students with a nuanced understanding of media and communication. With an expected graduation in Spring 2026, I'm committed to making the most of this journey and emerging as a catalyst for positive change in the field of Communications and Media.
As I conclude my first year as a grad student, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunities and experiences that have shaped my academic journey thus far. Here's to the adventures that lie ahead and the transformative power of education.
